Hackett on Alito Confirmation
from Hackett For Ohio:
Cincinnati, OH – Paul Hackett, Iraq War veteran and Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, released the following statement today regarding the confirmation of Justice Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.
“Today’s confirmation of Judge Alito to the Supreme Court is not in the best interests of the United States, and will tilt the Court far to the right. Judge Alito is not a fitting replacement for Justice O’Connor,” Hackett said. “During his confirmation hearings Justice Alito did little to address the fears many mainstream Americans have that he would use his position on the bench to advance his radical agenda.”
“Mike DeWine towed the party line and put his stamp of approval on what I fear will be a polarizing force on the Supreme Court for the next 30 years,” Hackett said.
Hackett supported the efforts of those Democratic Senators that lead the call to filibuster the nomination of Justice Samuel Alito, but was disappointed that more did not show leadership on the issue.
“I’m proud of those Democrats in the Senate who fought back against the Bush Administration and Senate Republicans’ rush to place a right-wing ideologue on the bench for a life-time appointment,” Hackett said. “It is shameful that some in our party missed an important opportunity to show regular Americans that they stand for something, and were willing to do battle to protect America from a radical shift to the right on the Supreme Court. The people of Ohio should know that when I am their Senator, I will have the courage to stand up for what I believe in,” Hackett said.
