Grover to DeWine: Tickle Me, Elmo

In what appears to be a desperate plea to get back his conservative base, Mike DeWine is playing Elmo to Norquist’s Grover and will apparently finally become a signer on the ATR’s no-new-taxes pledge. This from today’s Washington Times:

“He called the other day and he was talking about getting support from Americans for Tax Reform,” Mr. Norquist told me. “I told him he is not a signer but we could send it over to him and that would be a very helpful sign, a commitment that you are never going to vote to raise taxes.”

“He said he hasn’t ever voted for tax increases and doesn’t think he will have a problem with that and asked us to send it over.”

Same article points out that Mike thinks Sherrod is his best political advantage:

But while Mr. DeWine faces a tough battle for his political survival in Ohio, where the Republican state government has been tarred by scandal and Gov. Bob Taft’s approval score is barely in the teens, he has a secret weapon: his Democratic opponent.

Ultraliberal Rep. Sherrod Brown has voting record that starts with his opposition to the anti-terrorist Patriot Act, and consistent votes to cut or freeze defense and intelligence spending. He even voted against the $87 billion supplemental funds for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and against every tax cut.

I think to combat this we talk more trade, no? I really hate to say I told you so and hope like hell that I can eat some crow and call Sherrod my Senator, but I don’t believe I’ll get to. I take crow blackened with a side of dirty rice, btw, for those ready to serve me up some in November.

Plunderchat:

Once again, Brown needs to be the aggressor on these issues. Money is being sqaundered on military misadventures that the middle-class will be paying in increased taxes on all levels for decades to come. He needs to start talking about how the military has misused our money in Iraq and how voting for those appropriations meant moving large sums to Halliburton that are as yet unaccounted for while they were supplying our soldiers with contaminated water. make the Republicans look like the wasteful spenders! IT’S SO EASY! Fuck Grover Norquist. He has no credibility! Attack him!
