haven’t had a Daily Show clip in a while. This one is good. You have biting Jon Stewart humor and Rumsfeld saying “henny penny”…choice!

Bush speech:

…and China can grow even more successful by allowing the Chinese people the freedom to assemble, to speak freely, and to worship…

and oh, by the way, would someone arrest that woman for speaking freely?

Subodh gets a short mention in this Wired article about the Simpsons ad:

And, in a rather perplexing spot, an Indian-American candidate for Ohio attorney general, Subodh Chandra, has created a Simpsons-themed toon (.mov) comparing himself favorably to the show’s Indian shopkeeper, Apu.

The article focuses on Nevada’s gubernatorial race, where Jim Gibson’s campaign put up a site with a Star Wars lampooning of his opponent. The viral ad is pro quality and is a sign of things to come. The idea came from Gibson’s campaign host, Load, which will be the amount of money they make when they start a national consultancy producing and distributing such ads.

This should give Chandra even more mileage out of this . Damn I wish I was better at flash…

from Gay People’s Chronicle:

Cleveland–The matter of a gay man who spent four months in jail for a non-existent sex crime has become a flash point in the Democratic primary race for Ohio attorney general.

It’s not going to go away.

Athens News has it covered well. Sulzer and Space obviously are the two front runners. Stewart is decent, but out-gunned. Then there is Applegate, who sounds Libertarian and will not be a factor. This response was classic:

Applegate said that he does not think the federal government should be involved in the general welfare of the people.

Who should be involved Ralph? Corporate America? The Church? Hollywood?

I move away from Sulzer and toward Space on stem cell research. Zack has a very personal and principled stance on it:

On the issue of stem-cell research:

* Applegate said he does not know enough about it to say if he is for or against it, but said he will study the issue.

* Space, whose son has juvenile diabetes, said that stem-cell research offers his family, and many other families, hope for a cure to this and other diseases. He supports it.

* Stewart said she also supports stem-cell research.

* Sulzer does not support stem-cell research on embryos, but supports adult stem-cell research and said funding should be improved for the numerous programs working to find cures for diseases and health problems.

Sulzer’s position belies his conservative democrat leanings and pro-life position. His also is a position that ignores the key nature of embryonic stem cells that differs from adult stem cells – pluripotentiality. Adult stem cells have already become specialized and therefore don’t have the same potential as embryonic.

I also really like Space’s focus on alternative energy sources. Either of these guys is a good alternative to Ney. I can support either, but my positions more closely resemble Zack’s.

Washington, DC. – EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest grassroots political network and financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its endorsement of Mary Jo Kilroy in her bid for Ohio’s 15th Congressional District.

“Mary Jo Kilroy is an independent voice for the people of Ohio, who she has served for over 15 years,” said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY’s List. “As a member of Congress, she will help bring needed change to Washington. EMILY’s List considers this to be one of the most important races we are involved in and our membership will lend all its considerable strength to seeing that Mary Jo Kilroy is victorious.”

Kilroy has spent her life fighting for the working families of this district. She served on the Columbus School Board for eight years. She was then elected to the Franklin County Commission, on which she serves today.

Kilroy is a leader for change who knows that the 15th district needs better representation on the issues that matter to them, such as health care, affordable housing and economic priorities. Kilroy’s candidacy is an opportunity for Democrats to defeat the fourth ranking member of the Republican Congress.

“I am honored to have earned the support of the thousands of individual women and men who are members of EMILY’s List,” said Kilroy. “The people of Ohio deserve a change in leadership and I am the person who will bring about that change.”

With more than 100,000 members, EMILY’s List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY’s List has helped elect 61 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 11 to the U.S . Senate, and eight governors. In only ten election cycles, EMILY’s List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices and other key local offices.

Great post up on BSB today about Dems and Iraq. It points to this Raw Story post that talks about Dems laying low in Iran. As you know, Iran has been worrying me for some time.

I’m not worried as much by Iran (despite recent fear mongering headlines that they might have nukes in 16 days!), but by both our current administration’s posturing toward war and Democrats unwillingness to step up this time and oppose it. Do they really want to be in the position they are in with Iraq once more? Support it then say, “well, we thought this might not work out…we were, uh…really against it but we voted for it cuz…uh…we…uh…groupthink…fuck!”

Earth to Dem leadership: Americans don’t have goosestep support for the war anymore. You can come out now! Jesus H. Christ! Democrats better wake the hell up and fast. If I don’t start hearing some “these folks are incredibly incompetent” talk soon, I’m coming down there and it ain’t gonna be pretty. How much more clear could it be that Americans are tired of this administration’s complete lack of integrity and leadership? Do you want that letter certified Democratic leadership?

No, let’s just keep talking jobs while fucking Rome is burning. Lovely idea.

from Ohio Farm Bureau Federation:

COLUMBUS- U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office announced more than $2 billion in government money is available to bring broadband technology to rural communities in Ohio and other states.

While a majority of the state of Ohio has access to broadband services, there are many unserved and underserved areas in rural and small communities.

That’s the way Mike! Those Progressive Farmers for Truth wanna pound on you too guy! I’ll organize the first Rural Blogger Teach-In. Yeehaa!

Tony Snow? Of course. Anyone at Fox really. Hell, O’Reilly would be good. These guys are already Bush administration spokesmen. I’m really hoping they do pick Tony. It would make what alot of us have been saying for years so very obvious: Fox News is just a shill for this White House and the Republicans.

Why wouldn’t they pick Snow? It would be the ultimate act of arrogant “we don’t give a damn how it looks”, and they do enough of that already. Plus, as Media Matters reports, he’d already fit in quite well filling in for Simple Scotty:

Media Matters for America has documented numerous false and misleading claims advanced by Snow as a Fox News commentator:

* Snow falsely asserted that former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV said his wife, Valerie Plame, “wasn’t covert for six years” before she was exposed as a CIA operative by syndicated columnist Robert Novak.

* Snow put forward numerous falsehoods to argue that “[e]volutionary theory, like ID [intelligent design], isn’t verifiable or testable. It’s pure hypothesis.”

* Snow claimed that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the “most liberal justice in American history,” despite evidence to the contrary.

* Snow peddled the baseless Republican National Committee talking point that 2004 presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) had blamed U.S. troops for the explosives looted from the Al Qaqaa military installation following the invasion of Iraq. Snow said, “[T]he Kerry campaign is not criticizing the president here. They’re criticizing our troops.”

* Following President Bush’s lead, Snow distorted Kerry’s stated desire to reduce terrorism to a “horrible nuisance.” Snow claimed Kerry had “called terrorists a nuisance.”

* Snow backed Swift Boat Veterans for Truth’s attacks on Kerry, falsely claiming, “[T]here has been no documentary contradiction of the Swift Boat stuff.”

* Snow falsely defended Bush from probing questions regarding his National Guard service.

So I say bring it! He’ll be an easy mark as well. Do you have any other ideas on who should be the next idiot talking point robot?

Wow! I just finished listening to the first track off the new Tool album Vicarious. If this is representative, us Tool fans are in for a well-worth-the-wait album! Vicarious is classic Tool, with some new timing changes and a really unique guitar riff. I loved it! But then again, I view Tool shows as somewhat of a religious experience.

I’m OGT, back from ‘92 – the first EP. Got turned on to them back in my band days in Nashville. We played with some guys from Alton, IL (Judge Nothing) who played out in Cali and heard them and said, “Watch for this Tool band”. Two weeks later we heard “Sweat” on a tape compilation given out at a Henry Rollins concert. That would be all she wrote. Can’t wait to pick this one up!

It sucks to see him go – really it is – but there are many (both left and right) giving Simple Scotty the send off. Plenty of tributes out there. Here are my favorites:

Rolling Stone:

“George W. Bush’s presidency appears headed for colossal historical disgrace. Barring a cataclysmic event on the order of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, after which the public might rally around the White House once again, there seems to be little the administration can do to avoid being ranked on the lowest tier of U.S. presidents. And that may be the best-case scenario. Many historians are now wondering whether Bush, in fact, will be remembered as the very worst president in all of American history.”

So is he worried about such a legacy? Nah:

Having waved away the lessons of history in the making of his decisions, the present-minded Bush doesn’t seem to be concerned about his place in history. “History. We won’t know,” he told the journalist Bob Woodward in 2003. “We’ll all be dead.”

from CQPolitics:

Dean, who met with reporters at a Wednesday breakfast organized by the Christian Science Monitor, conceded that “a national wave is necessary” for his party to win congressional majorities in this November’s elections. Dean said that there are two conditions for such a wave to occur: that people “want change” — which Dean said is borne out by polling data — and that the Democratic Party “has to be seen as the vehicle for change.”

My emphasis because that is the important part. As I over-read recently, folks ain’t gonna change horses unless they see a real reason to – no matter how screwed up their horse is.

Dean touts coming success in Ohio:

Touted his party’s chances in Ohio, where Republicans are on the defensive amid questions about the ethical behavior of Gov. Bob Taft, Rep. Bob Ney and other members of the state GOP. Dean noted that Rep. Ted Strickland, the party’s pick for the open governor’s seat, and Rep. Sherrod Brown, who is challenging Republican Sen. Mike DeWine, face no serious opposition in the May 2 Democratic primary. Dean touted Franklin County Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy, who is challenging Republican Rep. Deborah Pryce in the Columbus-area 15th District.

Face no serious competition. Right. Damn, I wished this were a MTB session…

I like the Kilroy mention, but what about the others? Is Howard really in touch with Ohio?

(via email) Sulzer calls for real accountability, Rumsfeld resignation

CHILLICOTHE – Democratic congressional candidate Joe Sulzer issued the following statement today regarding the resignation of White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan:

“This is a classic case of ’shooting the messenger.’ But the American people demand real accountability, not sacrificial lambs. If George Bush, Bob Ney and the Republicans are serious about accountability for their errors, they will crack down on the true offenders.

“As a Vietnam veteran, I am proud to join six retired generals in calling on Donald Rumsfeld to resign. It wasn’t Scott McClellan who sent our sons and daughters to Iraq without a plan for victory. It wasn’t Scott McClellan whose arrogance led to the loss of young lives in Iraq. It was Donald Rumsfeld. It was Rumsfeld who made our troops pay the ultimate price for his poor planning. That’s why he should own up to his mistakes and resign.

“Unfortunately, we have had a Congress that refuses to hold itself – or the administration – accountable. And, here in Ohio, we have a Congressman in Bob Ney who is too busy playing the corruption game to ask tough questions of the administration. When I am in Congress, I will make sure that anyone who sends our sons and daughters into battle has to answer for their actions. And I will never be satisfied until those who are responsible are held accountable.”

…hear that Charlie Wilson?
