Matt Taibbi finally “loses it” re: popular media:
I awoke this morning in New York City to find Britney Spears plastered all over the cover of two gigantic daily newspapers, simply because she cut her hair off over the weekend. To me, this crosses a line. My definition of a news story involves something happening. If nothing happens, then you can’t have “news,” because nothing has changed since the day before. Britney Spears was an idiot last Thursday, an idiot on Friday, and an idiot on both Saturday and Sunday. She was, shockingly, also an idiot on Monday. It [...]
Full Story... →Coral reefs are one of my favorite biotopes. It’s astounding the variety of flora and fauna you can find in a very small area of reef, with their attendant diversity in color. Plus sessile animals! Those of us paying attention know that these species are extremely sensitive to environmental changes, and that even a minor rise in water temperature – a degree or two – would spell disaster, and could result in mass extinctions. Unfortunately, temperature isn’t the only parameter changing – water chemistry is changing, too.
The world’s oceans are turning acidic due to the buildup of carbon [...]
Full Story... →From Sunday’s Washington Post:
Behind the door of Army Spec. Jeremy Duncan’s room, part of the wall is torn and hangs in the air, weighted down with black mold. When the wounded combat engineer stands in his shower and looks up, he can see the bathtub on the floor above through a rotted hole. The entire building, constructed between the world wars, often smells like greasy carry-out. Signs of neglect are everywhere: mouse droppings, belly-up cockroaches, stained carpets, cheap mattresses.
This is the world of Building 18, not the kind of place where Duncan expected to recover when he [...]
Full Story... →The senate just failed to pass their non-binding Iraq resolution.
The vote was 56 to 34.
7 Republicans voted with the Democrats- including Ohio’s George Voinovich.
But not Joe Lieberman.
I am so sick of Joe fucking Lieberman.
Anyway- here’s what he said yesterday…
THE WAR: Lieberman warns of potential constitutional crisis over Iraq
In a statement on the Senate floor Friday concerning the non-binding Iraq resolution, Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman warned of a potential constitutional crisis over Iraq and urged united in the war against Islamist extremism.
?The non-binding resolution before us today, we all [...]
Full Story... →So Miami Heat Basketball Player Tim Hardaway goes on the radio and says “I hate gay people”…
and it?looks like the christian right may have finally found a candidate conservative enough for their tastes.
My prediction:? Immediately after getting out of rehab, Tim Hardaway will be flying to Dallas to meet (and pray) with Evangelical Kook James Dobson to discuss his campaign strategy.?
They’ll probably?start with a grass-roots type thing… maybe a DRAFT HARDAWAY website and some bumper stickers with clever slogans like “screw the queers- hardaway’s here!”?and “ask me about my homophobia”.
Full Story... →Joel Surnow is the man behind FOX’s popular action drama, 24. Personally, I like 24. Despite the show getting increasingly insane, I find it enjoyable. Jack Bauer does, in fact, kick ass. But I also recognize it’s fiction. Torture works on 24, every time, but – perhaps because I’m a member of the reality-based community – I know that torture does not work in real life.
Full Story... →In 1995, Chrysler got 10 years worth of tax breaks to move its Mopar parts distribution center from Solon to Streetsboro.
Those tax breaks ran out last year- and this year Chrysler is closing the distribution center.
Man, I would be PISSED if I was Streetsboro.
I’d get together with some top Streetsboro lawyers- and make sure the headlines read:? “Streetsboro to Chrysler: Give Us Back Our Tax Breaks, Bitches!”
Instead, the Mayor and Rep Tim Ryan both said they will help retrain or relocate the soon-to-be-unemployed workers.? The headline read: “Streetsboro says it can weather [...]
Full Story... →Just finished watching the documentary Why We Fight. I’m a little late to the game, but what a fantastic documentary. It avoids cheap emotional tricks, and does a tremendous job of laying out the evidence supporting Dwight Eisenhower’s statement about the dangers of the military-industrial complex. Followed it up with the good – but not quite as great – film Iraq For Sale: The War Profiteers, explaining who is making money off of the Iraq War, and at whose expense.
Bottom line – I have my doubts as to whether democracy and capitalism/consumerism can [...]

John McCain (born August 29, 1936) turned 70 this past August.? If he won in ’08, he would be the oldest person ever elected president of the
United States (Reagan currently holds the record at 69).? So, to be realistic, this is probably his last chance to run.
McCain knows this and, even though the senior Senator from Arizona is doing quite well in the polls- usually ahead of, or in a tie with Giuliani- he appears ready to do anything necessary [...]
Full Story... →If you want a completely different perspective on the topic of Al Gore running for president, then check out Rolling Stone magazine. (thanks for the link, amber)
Tim Dickinson, the article’s author, makes the case that Al Gore may be “the ideal candidate for the Democrats” in part because he is “a Hollywood celebrity, the star of the third-highest-grossing documentary of all time.”
Hell- if that’s all it takes- then there must be a bunch of other possible candidates, right?
Actually- no.
Take a look at this list of the top ten highest-grossing documentaries
and you’ll see [...]
