True M.E.- what I meant to say was: Ken Blackwell’s dislike for this bill has nothing to do with the bill’s impact on religious speech- which is none. Instead, it has to do with his hate for TEH GAYS.

Actually, Joseph, you’re incorrect to suggest that this hate crimes bill has nothing to do with religion. It includes religious preference as one of the classes protected from hate crimes.

Something Blackwell also conveniently ignores.

I think what is most alarming is how Blackwell tries to claim that the bill will criminalize average people simply believing that homosexuality is a sin. People will believe him, and that’s a real problem.

This is a hate crimes bill and has nothing to do with religion- because religion SHOULD have nothing to do with the hateful, denunciatory speech Ken Blackwell claims to be protecting.

The fact is: people who use religion as an excuse to teach hate and promote violence are doing much more than just professing their religion- especially if their speech leads others to do commit violence.

Hell, the ‘rights’ Ken claims to be protecting don’t even exist. It’s ALREADY against the law. It’s called Inciting to Violence:

no person shall knowingly engage in conduct designed to urge or incite another to commit any offense of violence, when either of the following apply: (1) the conduct takes place under circumstances that create a clear and present danger that any offense of violence will be committed; (2) the conduct proximately results in the commission of any offense of violence

(Ohio Revised Code, ?2917.01, 1996).

As far as I know, there aren?t anti-gay ministers currently in jail on an Inciting to Violence conviction. And I doubt the hate crimes bill will be any different.

At the end of the day, this is the typical gay-bashing, homophobic crap we always hear from Ken ‘one-note’ Blackwell. It will have no impact on the the hate crimes bill or on the opinions of typical voters.

It is right-wing rhetoric intended for a right-wing audience; exactly the kind of hateful speech that TownHall.com readers expect and love.
