For me, this is THE issue of this campaign and so far, I would have to say, this is the best and most detailed statement that I've seen.

And, I think that Elizabeth Edwards is way cool.

It's only mandatory if you want to participate in the program.

No one is forcing you in.

But if you CHOOSE to get free health care from the government, then there are some rules that you need to follow.

It's an optional service provided by the government with some conditions.

Just like using government-owned roadways- you need to get a drivers license and follow the rules of the road.

That old libertarian core is twinged a bit by the words "mandatory preventative care", so I suppose I can understand why RABid is, well, rabid about this. But as a matter of policy, it makes perfect sense, and getting an annual physical is hardly an imposition on someone, especially if it's paid for already!

Not to mention the benefits of feeling better all the time because the little stuff is handled before it becomes big stuff. I ignored a cyst on my back because it wasn't causing any problems, and while it never turned out to be anything but a cyst of dead cells, when it decided to grow quickly a few years back it was painful. Painful enough that I begged my physician to slice me open sans anesthesia as an emergency measure to drain the thing and relieve the pressure and pain. I should have listened to his suggestion to cut it out earlier - it probably would have saved money (I needed surgery to remove the cyst and fix the hole in my back left by the scalpel cuts), and definitely would have saved me some pain.
