Barbara Sykes Should Remember Who Her Friends Are

The plan by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) that gives women 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave IS a good idea.

I think we can all agree on that.

But Barbara Sykes, chair of the OCRC, is out of line by refusing the Governor’s request “to delay the hearing to make sure small businesses have the chance to voice their concerns about the proposal.”

I know Jerid is siding with his gal Sykes on this- and I understand his reasons. It does seem like a good proposal.

But that’s really not the point.

When Strickland appointed Barbara Sykes to chair the Ohio Civil Rights Commission earlier this year it really seems like he did her a favor. She was the only Democrat to lose her bid for statewide office and she needed a job.

The way I see it- when someone does you a favor and gives you a job then you at least owe them the courtesy of honoring a simple request for a little more time to review your plans.

Plunderchat:

Don’t even get me started on how horrible of a campaign she ran. Then again, she didn’t really want to run and it showed.

Of all the ODP endorsements, hers was the one that wound up hurting us in the general election given that she was endorsed over a county auditor who at least could cite some relevant experience for the job.

I think she’s all but made it appear that this proposal is being made hastily. Opponents are going to cite Governor Strickland as evidence that this proposal was being railroaded through the regulatory rulemaking process.

And it’s probably all for not because you just know that the General Assembly is going to intervene and kill the whole thing.

I wasn’t thinking about it that way- but you are right.

Ted seems like a reasonable guy who, so far, has done a good job building consesus on stuff like this.

It would be a shame if the whole proposal failed to get implemented because Sykes couldn’t play nice.
