GOP Lawmakers Afraid of Background Checks?

According to The Dispatch there was quite a ruckus during debate in the State Senate over House Bill 104.

The bill would require state boards to perform background checks before issuing licenses. This would impact licenses for a long list of professions- everything from accountants to veterinarians.

The trouble came when Democratic Senator John Boccieri proposed “that all legislative candidates go through a criminal background check, with results posted on the Internet.” According to Boccieri: “If we’re holding this standard for everyone else beneath us, then legislators should be held to the very same standard.” Good point.

The republicans immediately objected and the GOP majority quickly voted to kill the amendment.

Which really makes you wonder… why are GOP lawmakers afraid of background checks?
