I'm with you on this one Brian. The government has certain basic functions- but enforcing one standard of morality over another is not one of those function.

Public health and safety is.

Prostitution, like most vice crimes (e.g. gambling, drugs), has a much greater negative effect on society when it's made illegal and forced underground. There is no concern for the health or safety of the women involved. And the illegal operations are run by criminals who take in tons of un-taxed cash and use violence against each other and the police.

When postitution is outlawed - only outlaw pimps will have prostitutes.

Using that same logic, I assume you are Ok with legalizing prostitution. After all, it is a woman?s body to do with as she pleases.

Actually, Gordon... yes. I am OK with legalizing prostitution. I think it should be regulated for the protection of all involved - disease control, attempts to eliminate coercive action, stuff like that. If a woman (or man) freely choses to enter the sex industry, then they should be able to.

Again, "pro-choice" is just that - about allowing free choice. Pro-choice != pro-abortion. Ideally, Juno would have used birth control and not have been faced with that choice - but again, that makes for a short movie.

"....it?s about empowering women to have control over their own bodies, and to be able to make choices free of coercion"

Good point. Wingnuts try to label the pro-choice position as PRO-ABORTION but that's ridiculous. No one is Pro-Abortion. We all think it's a horrible position to be in and an extremely difficult decision to make. But the choice is there- and needs to be there.
