I finally got a response from David and Elizabeth Lawson, the Utah couple selling Barack Obama Sock Monkeys.

Dear Joseph,

Thank you for your email and your forthright feedback. No, this is not a joke, and our intention is not to offend.

Our objective is three fold:

1} Provide a cuddly toy for the millions of Obama fans to take a little piece of their favorite candidate home with them.
2} Have a means for children to become a part of the political process with a cuddly plush toy all their own.
3| Contribute a pivotal article of presidential election memoribilia.

After test marketing our product, we found a majority of our customer base finds our plush toy fun and loveable.

By virtue of our plush toy now temporarily out of stock, we’ve had to expedite a new order of inventory to meet the needs of our customers who want TheSockObama.

Joseph, again we thank you and appreciate your interest in the TheSockObama.

Regards,

Dave & Ellee

The thing that really struck me here was #3. A pivotal article of presidential election memoribilia?

I’ll have to agree with them here. People will be talking about this cuddly, racist toy for years to come.

Maybe they’ll even put it in a museum along side toys like this big-lipped african native halloween mask from the 50s and this oh-so-cute sambo-eating-a-watermellon bank.

By any standard, representing America’s soon-to-be first black president as a floppy eared, big-lipped monkey in a suit IS racist.

Psst. I think Joe is pulling your chain. Not totally sure, as he is one who has some IT skilz. But I’m about 60% sure he is just messing with you.

    Had enough fun yet?

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

@50: No. It wouldn’t be for Joseph. In fact, I believe he may even be blogging from jail now.

  • Jessica

The account is on a watch and police are coming to file a police report. So he can use my bank account in Jail.

  • tim russo

    police! internets! save my bigotry!

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

Jessica. Seriously. Do yourself a favor and unplug your computer and toss it out of the trailer window.

    Seriously.

  • http://plunderbund.com Joseph

You don’t even have enough money in your account for me to waste time stealing.

And I wouldn’t want you to miss the monthly mortgage payment for your trailer.

  • Jessica

    hardly a trailor, LOL

  • Jessica

you must not have been in my acct then. how much did i have smarty?

  • http://plunderbund.com Joseph

    Sorry- doublewide.

  • tim russo

    double wide! internets!

  • Jessica

SOO spill it.. if you were in it, How much do I have?

  • tim russo

i took all your money and gave it to the NAACP.

  • http://snowe.livejournal.com Snowe

Jessica, the more you post, the lower my opinion gets. Not only are you a prejudiced asshole, but you are also too dense to realize when people are making fun of you. Please, read the link I gave you about IP addresses.

I cannot believe that you have called the police because someone was mean to you on the Internet. They’ll probably have a good long laugh at your expense.

  • http://plunderbund.com Joseph

Obviously, Jessica, I didn’t access your bank account.

    Not yet, anyway.

  • Jessica

I called the police because somebody has threatend to steal my money. That is why. They will not laugh when they get here, they take this internet hacking stuff seriously!

  • Jessica

well why are you so rude to people who just come to share their opinion. I’m not the only one who thinks this, and personally i’m a little bumbed I couldnt get a obama doll!

  • http://plunderbund.com Joseph

Officer: “uh… ma’am – are you telling me you called 911 because you think someone on a blog is stealing money from your bank account?”

Jessica: “yes! Yes! just look at what they said!”

Officer walks over to computer – reads the screen – turns back to Jessica: “ma’am, is your name Jessica?”

Jessica: “yes! see how they threatened me!”

    Officer: “Racist bitch.”

Office slams door of trailer on his way out.

  • http://snowe.livejournal.com Snowe

Oh for heaven’s sake. You freaked out over someone knowing your location because of your IP address, and they took the opportunity to tease you about your ignorance.

You didn’t come to share your opinion, you came to spew racist bile. I’m not inclined to be nice to racists who whinge about not being able to buy racist memorabilia.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com/ Brian

    This. Is. Teh. Awesumz.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

So. Have we proven that racism is borne of ignorance or what? PLUS we got a good laugh!

  • tim russo

the police just showed up at my house. they were both black. then they made out.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

LOL. Tim trying to push the thread to 90. Thanks Tim!

I’ll bet the first thing the officers had to say to Jessica, once on the scene, was:

“Ma’am. Put down the Moon Pie and Pork Rinds and no one gets hurt!”

  • J-Dog

And no, I’m not black either, Jessica.

  • http://www.blogesque.com. Len

I begin to suspect Poe’s Law. Jessica is just too good to be true.

  • Savvy

hey Eric, you should really see someone about your White Guilt. that chic has just as much right to post her opinion as do the minions of black bigots in the blogosphere. If you can’t handle, don’t post on racial issues.

~a not so “Typical 1/2 White Person”

  • J-Dog

Well, after Plunderbund done stoled all of Jessica’s money and gave it to the NAACP, then Jessica would be Poe folk, right?

I’ve posted this comment on cynical-c which links to this page. And thought I’d copy/paste it here as well:

I may be going out on a limb here, but I must say that Obama sock doll is kinda cute.

I’m not saying the racial undertones of this doll aren’t actually racist – in all probability they are.

I’m just thinking maybe it’s not as harmful as it may at first appear.

If anything, this campaign has been a way for Americans to try to break away from race issues which have been dogging them their whole lives.
And being scared/outraged at a cute monkey doll
is not really the way to go IMHO.

There IS a market for this toy. And that market is probably racist redneck republicans. But in a strange way it might also be a way for them to deal with their next president being black.

I can imagine at least one little blonde girl out there who’s going to make this her favorite doll, if her parents buy it.
In a strange way this might actually help that little girl to not grow up being scared/hating black people.
Sure, some parents will freak out when their kids end up liking the doll. But these kids’ll know in their hearts that their parents are over-reacting, and that the big black boogeyman they’ve been taught to hate might actually be kinda cute.

    just a thought…

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

@76: Thanks Savvy. You don’t know me. Please don’t pretend to. That “chic” (racist bitch) has zero right to post her opinion on this here corner of ours on the Internets.

We encourage commenting, but discourage disjointed racist polemics.

I can handle a great deal – beyond what the likes of Jessica or you might toss my way. Ask around. I’ll also post on whatever I feel.

  • http://snowe.livejournal.com Snowe

She has the right to her opinion, sure. That doesn’t mean she gets to post it here. The bloggers here pay for this space, so they get to decide what’s welcome here and what isn’t.

How nice of you to assume that anyone interested in racial equality is a “minion” of “black bigots”.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

@79: Armand, that’s probably one of the dumbest things I’ve heard today. This being the day it is, I’ve heard a great deal of dumbness.

I think you fell off the limb you were out on. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try try again!

I kinda, sorta get where you are coming from and I sense you say this with the best intent. My view is you shine light on and destroy racist thought wherever you see it. No quarter. I’m not thinking “this could actually be good” is a proper response to a racist Obama monkey doll.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

I think this may be entirely appropriate for this thread:

  • tim russo

the black cops are still making out at my house.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

@84: That’s not true. Know how I know? If it were, you’d already have a YouTube up on your Internets Blogsite!

  • tim russo

    ok, i lied.

the black cops are making out at jessica’s house. in a cage. with double headed dildos.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

No wonder she hasn’t been around. I hope she has a video camera. What’s the saying? Once you go black…

So I guess the million comparisons to our current president as a chimp would also be considered racist or at the least, ill-thought? I find it funny that the average reaction to that comparison is one of humor but change the color and it’s considered racist. Where’s the blogs of outrage on this? Hypocritical don’t you think?

I guess our nation’s past-time making fun of a public figure (particularly presidents) becomes taboo when that figure shade becomes a few shades darker.

I think my fellow people of color, need to lighten up (no pun intended). ACQUIRE A SENSE OF HUMOR and also spellcheck. It’s watermelon with one “l”.

  • http://www.plunderbund.com Eric

@92: Hi EBW. Thanks for visiting Plunderbund! The difference between comparing Bush to a chimp (both of lower intelligence than human) and comparing Obama to a monkey and making it into a sock doll should be very obvious to an actual educated black woman.

    Really. It should.

  • Carolyn B.

Wow! Eric, Joseph and Snowe, I like the way you handled Jessica. It really saddens me to see such blatant racism, running rampant in today’s society. Unfortunately, racism is alive and kicking and there is no denying it what-so-ever. A vast majority of people refuse any type of change that falls outside of the box of their narrow, petty minded views, especially, when it means placing a Strong, Black Man in a Position of Power (something that has been feared by most). I am an African American Woman and very proud of my heritage. Don’t blame me for my forefathers’ mistakes, and I won’t blame you for yours! I see beyond your pettiness, and I question your worthiness! And sadly, I find you lacking.

Once you have learned to look beyond a person’s skin color (race/heritage), and can then make an intelligent, assessment of their character and worth, HOLLER back at me!

  • Eric B

Jessica, you asked for one good thing that came out of black people coming to the U.S. I’ll give you just 10 because the list is far too long to name them all.

  • Another Eric

The “Jessica Incident” was entertaining. People of ethnicities other then Anglo/White are sensitive about racism subjects due to most people of these cultures experiencing some type of injustice/unfairness at some point in their lives. Denotation of subjects/events as racism have often been done without logic and done with pure emotion. To tell others to simply “get over it”, “stop being sensitive”, or any other typical cliche said in order to dismiss another person or group’s feeling is obsurd; especially when one doesn’t know what is the cause “sensitivity”.
Example: People who call others “retarded” without thinking much of it (guilty here). One should not be angered when another person gets upset for usage of the word.It could be the individual being upset has a handicapped family member. Recently learned to stop using the word through a good friend of mine.
People often compare apples to oranges when defending or attacking almost any subject. Using Bush as a chimp can not be compared to Obama as a chimp. Apples to Apples would be making bush a skinhead or putting him in clan attire. Even a hillbilly/redneck/broken truck isn’t meant to be racist, its meant to satire stupidity and or ignorance. You can’t use an object/symbol that has been used to stereotype or oppress a group <— common sense that many in this country do not own. No one said it might not be cute, interesting or funny, but it is poor in taste and racist. I find it funny in the sense that someone actually thought it might be okay or no one would “get it”. Also, if you ever have to state any of the following: “im an educated person”, “im smart” , “i went to such and such school therfore…”, YOU NEED TO STOP TYPING. Step back from the keyboard, pick up some logic books and keep “educating” yourself. Maybe one day you’ll realize one should let words sway an opinion of education or what quality that education consists of.

Before the smart ass comments occur
    A) I’m Latino/Hispanic/Mexican/Mexican-
American/American all a label, i dont care what you call me. Don’t call me white though, thems a fighting word, umm not really.
    B) My son is a little hillbilly (part irish, where the term hillbilly came from) who doesnt like shoes.
    C) I don’t take stuff seriously, unless you are arrogant or ignorant
    D) Dave Chapelle said “The world isn’t ready for the N-word” after he got back from Africa. That’s the opinion of a comic with “very educated” parents.
