Rove packs on the dogwhistles…

Karl Rove on Obama:

“Even if you never met him, you know this guy,” Rove said…. “He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Tim Dickinson’s take at Rolling Stone:

If you unpack this it’s really disgusting. He’s playing to all the worst classist and racist fears of the Greatest Generation. Obama’s the uppity black guy who some court forced your country club to admit and now he’s flaunting his sexual appetites — why is Rove painting the long-married Obama as a swinging bachelor? — and looking down on you. It’s all said with a veil of civility, but the Lee Atwater-ian subtext couldn’t be clearer.

Don’t forget the unstated implication that the “beautiful date” at the country club is a white woman. Miscegenation, racism, elitism, and more in one sentence. Karl Rove’s kung fu is strong.

But let’s not also forget to mention Karl’s big mistake; the clear elitism of the GOP. After all, how many normal working-class folk are ever hanging out at “the country club”, and thus could be sneered at by some uppity negro who forced his way in?

Plunderchat:

Yes. The premise is almost elitist. How does Karl know what happens at country clubs unless he and his rich Republican friends are there hanging out with their martinis, cigarettes in holders, and lovely arm candy.

I really can see McCain and wife in this setting much more than the fist bumping Obamas. Call me crazy.

Can we be done with this guy already?

If anything, that little Rove story fits better for McCain - who probably does belong to a country club and who actually does have the trophy wife.

…that’s where i was headed with it. ;-)
