If you read this, you quickly realize the SI reporter got played by a racing team that is at the moment struggling for a sponsor and dying for attention. I’m not a NASCAR fan per se (I have friends who ask me to check results on my iPhone is as close as I get to it), but a small amount of research turns up information that BAM racing is an also ran.
TONS of things wrong with the entire scenario. Said team owners are staunch Republicans (could be good if they made some statement that they were actually supporting Obama), said driver has given to R’s, said car is a Toyota. Not the type of scene I would think the Obama camp would want to wade into.
Sure enough, they kill it:
“The Obama campaign will not be sponsoring a car in the Sprint Cup series, though we will continue to look for ways to reach out to voters and convey Senator Obama’s message of change.”
This smells like a desperate racing team trying to use Obama for publicity…and it may have just worked. Tom Bowles of SI got played hard though. I doubt he confirmed this with the Obama camp before pushing out something BAM Racing wanted out.
