The fact that you think this sort of thing is due to understaffing is laughable! Campaigns are historically overstaffed, especially with all the interns who are clamoring for a chance to get an ‘in’ with someone who has actual clout. I agree that McCain had nothing to do with this, but mistakes like copying a letter and forgetting to change the names of the previous author is a mistake that no campaign wants to make. Everything is dissected as a sign, from McCain not looking Obama in the eye, to assuming any comment using the word ‘lipstick’ is referring to Palin. He double registered and was sent two different letters, which is ridiculous because they must not be running any programs which check double registers (even my college club has this!), but the letters were insulting! Condescending to explain religious holidays to the actual followers is just plain patronizing, and should be halted immediately. If they are running out of things to say, they should make the e-mail short. There is someone on his staff just like me whose only job is to write letters and argue semantics. Fail, fail, and fail!

To be fair, you’d probably find the same discrepancies on Obama’s site, or, for that matter, the site of any busy individual. The fact that he copied Bush’s letter… essentially sending you a form letter sort of confirms the fact that it wasn’t an act of disrespect as much as an inference that he, or rather, those running the site for him, don’t have the time to do it right. They’re trying to win an election. I’m sure they have many other things to do as well, and this just got placed on the back burner.

As an Obama supporter, I’d be happy to really see McCain make a serious blunder, but this just isn’t the act of hostility you think it is.

So it sounds to me like the Bush guys running the McCain campaign (you know, same ones who smeared him in 2000) were all sitting around having their 5 minute Muslim outreach planning meeting when one asked, “Hey. Didn’t Bush do some bullshit for this Ramadan thingy?”

Bushie 2: “Hells yeah. Nice little diddy back in ’05)

Bushie 1: “Let’s just use that shit. Meeting adjourned”

Bushie 2: “OK, back to the polls and next week’s ad campaign. Ya’ll got the photoshopped Barack stuff making him look more black yet?”

@2: You are correct. They substituted “Gustav, Hanna, and Ike” for “Katrina, Rita, and Wilma”, which makes the plagiarism all the more willful.
