I don’t have a problem with the state Auditor conducting audits. It’s kind of in the job title.
To be fair I don’t even have a problem with the lottery audit that Mary Taylor announced back in November even though I thought then, and I still think now, that it was and still is politically motivated.
But when I saw today that Governor Strickland asked why the lottery audit is taking so long I was reminded of what Mary Taylor, now John Kasich’s running mate for Governor, said back when she announced the audit:
1. It would [...]
Full Story... →On the heels of the McChrystal firing Rusmussen conducted a poll that seems to have determined twenty-eight percent (28%) of U.S. voters think civilian control of the military is bad for the U.S.? And fewer than 50% think it’s a good idea?
What the fuck?
Does ANYONE really think we should have unbridled military control? Without civilian oversight?
Did Rasmussen limit their call list to 14 year old boys who just watched Taps for the first time?
Jeez guys. No wonder no one believes the numbers you put out about our Governor’s race.
Full Story... →The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the State of Ohio has awarded Medical Mutual of Ohio to run a temporary program to provide health insurance coverage to Ohioans who cannot qualify or afford health insurance due to having a pre-existing condition.
Assuming approval by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the program will start in August, a state insurance department spokeswoman said, and run until 2014, when broader federal health reforms kick in. Participants will have access to Medical Mutual’s network of doctors and providers, “the largest in the state,” said Medical Mutual’s Ed Byers.

Full Story... →TPM says the bill is largely the version that passed the Senate.
“Mr. Washington” Rob Portman (actually nickname given by Portman’s political allies in D.C.) announced in April that he opposed the Senate reform bill and, presumably would have joined the GOP caucus in their attempts to filibuster it. Lee Fisher was a vocal supporter of the bill and has been since announcing his candidacy.
The Ohio Democratic Party’s Portman spoof site has a good rundown of Portman’s Wall Street sympathies and pro-Wall Street record. There is a growing awareness that the Republican candidates [...]
Full Story... →This was Kasich on Toledo television earlier this month:
Here’s John Kasich’s campaign’s response yesterday to protests by Youngstown city officials over how Kasich’s tax plans will bankrupt Ohio’s cities and local governments and force them to raise taxes:
But a spokesman for the candidate tells us the measure being discussed was proposed by a state lawmaker — and has never been part of Kasich’s campaign.
The spokesman adds the income tax measure itself was defeated months ago, and is no longer even being considered.
John Kasich just threw the entire Ohio GOP legislative caucus under his [...]
Full Story... →Greg Sargent has a blog post up at the Washington Post about what the latest NBC/WSJ poll shows about the general electorate’s attitude towards a candidate that has been endorsed by half-term former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin:
The poll asked people how they’d respond if a Congressional candidate had various hypothetical attributes. Asked how they’d feel if a candidate were “endorsed by Sarah Palin,” the response was….
Enthusiastic about this attribute 8
Comfortable with this attribute 17
Have some reservations about this attribute 15
Very uncomfortable with this attribute 37
So a majority, 52%, reacted negatively. And an [...]
Full Story... →For a candidate who claims to be running a positive campaign about jobs, this seems to be yet another “off message” foray.
Of course the Strickland=Obama is a hard line to sell, what with Strickland opposing Obama in the primaries after all. Ohioans rarely connect its gubernatorial races as a referendum on the President.
That’s why Strickland’s approval rating has been rising while Obama’s been dropping.
Clearly, the Kasich campaign is trying to retool and find a new message. So now, they’re reduced to saying that people should vote for Kasich because it will “stop” Obama somehow. Except it won’t. [...]

Classic.
Full Story... →Governor Ted Strickland succeeded in getting new regulations that clarify that state employees can use family leave time to attend to “significant others” included partners in same-sex relationships.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR)- a bipartisan legislative committee (and is chaired by a Republican) that reviews and holds limited veto power over administrative rule changes passed the Strickland proposal with virtually no debate.
Today, the U.S. Department of Labor issued new regulations that also clarified that unmarried, same-sex partners also may benefit from the Family Medical Leave Act when their partner [...]
