“All we have to do is replace Obama… We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don’t need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget… We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don’t need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate… Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States. This is a change for Republicans: the House and Senate doing the work with the president signing bills. His job is to be captain of the team, to sign the legislation that has already been prepared.”
~ Grover Norquist at CPAC 2012
Let’s make sure that a Republican with “enough working digits to handle a pen” doesn’t get anywhere near the White House desk. We’ve already seen the rubber that is Mitt Romney’s spine when he’s dealing with the Tea Party and their radical ideas. We’ve also seen how his heart is aligned with them by how he speaks when he thinks he’s not on camera and how he treats people he thinks can do nothing for him. Courage comes from the heart and last week Ted Strickland reminded us of what we’ve seen of Romney’s heart. As Senator Harry Reid said, Mitt Romney lacks the courage to stand up to the Tea Party.
“Mitt Romney has demonstrated that he lacks the courage to stand up to the tea party, kowtowing to their demands time and again. There is nothing in Mitt Romney’s record to suggest he would act any differently as president. As governor of Massachusetts, he had a terrible relationship with Democrats, cordoning himself off behind a velvet rope instead of reaching out to build relationships. And in the near-decade that Mitt Romney has spent running for president, both his words and his actions have shown that pleasing the far right is more important to him than working across the aisle.”
~ Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
Yesterday I had the honor to sit at a table with about twelve women and the President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Cecile Richards, at a coffee shop in Columbus. Our friend Nancy Pitts of Women Have Options was asked to gather a small group of women to meet with Cecile to discuss the upcoming election over a cup of coffee. Cecile has taken her vacation time and used it to help get President Obama reelected. She knows how important his reelection is to the lives of the people she has always worked to help.
Cecile Richards is the daughter of Governor Ann Richards. Not only did Ann serve as Governor of Texas, she was also a high school teacher of history and social studies. Cecile grew up in an information-rich environment where she was given the civics understanding she needed in order to be an effective champion for the issues that matter most. For her lifelong advocacy for democracy, equality and women’s rights, Cecile Richards has received many forms of recognition. For example she was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” two years in a row.
Do you remember back in April 2011 when the Tea Party Congress threatened to shut down the government during wartime and a fragile economic recovery? The Tea Party was willing to cause that economic damage to our country and deliver a blow to our credit rating in order to block the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to issue global warming rules and to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. They took our nation hostage to fulfill their radical anti-science and anti-woman agenda.
Cecile Richards mentioned this memory as something she might one day tell her grandchildren about. To see my video with her in it <CLICK HERE>.
If you remember this incident as clearly as Cecile does, you’ll remember that at one crucial moment in the hostage negotiations, Tea Party Speaker of the House John Boehner was demanding a provision to restrict financing to Planned Parenthood.
“Nope. Zero,” the president said to the speaker. Mr. Boehner tried again. “Nope. Zero,” President Obama repeated. “John, this is it.”
I agree with Vice President Joe Biden when he says President Obama has a backbone like a ramrod.
So what do we want in the White House. A President with a backbone like a ramrod who will take climate change seriously and stand up for women’s health?
Or do we want someone who will be a rubber stamp to the Tea Party’s radical rightwing agenda?
