Are we a sports blog all of a sudden? I’m easily the most sports-obsessed author here, and even I’m taken aback at how much “King James” has dominated here recently.

I’m still going to pile on. I’m not an NBA fan; for hoops I’m a college guy (Ohio State, of course), and my interest in the NBA is mostly in wanting to see what The Villain can do in Philly. But LeBron is an icon across Ohio, and (as should be obvious) his leaving the Cavs will have a tremendous effect in quite a few areas beyond wins and [...]

President Clinton attended yesterday’s USA – Algeria match, and took in the dramatic and tense atmosphere. After, he headed down to the lockerroom, and reportedly hung out with the team for 45 minutes. This epic photo shows him enjoying a Budweiser with defender Carlos Bocanegra.

Classic.

…and burns to the ground.

The large Jesus statue iconic to Interstate 75 in Monroe was destroyed following an apparent lightning strike during a thunderstorm.

Motorists were stopped along the highway and along Union Road in Monroe to watch the 62-foot King of Kings statue burn. The fire was reported at 11:15 p.m. Monday, June 14. Within minutes, all that was left was the steel frame of the statue at Solid Rock Church, 904 N. Union Road.

My favorite bit? This:

“It sent goosebumps through my whole body because I am a believer,” said Levi Walsh, 29. [...]

US v England aftermath

On June 12, 2010 By

The US drew England today 1-1 at the World Cup, thanks to an absolutely dreadful spill by England goalkeeper Green. It was, I think, a fair result, and one we should be happy with.

But, some excellent images have appeared on the internet about the result. The first, the aforementioned spill (remember, BP is a British company):

This is photoshopped, but it’s amusing all the same – Obama laughing at a miffed David Beckham.

The US next play on Friday. Win that game, and advancement to the knockout stages is virtually assured.

Since we appear to be on a GBLT kick this week, I’ll toss this little tidbit out – children of lesbian couples score better on social and educational tests.

Compared with a group of control adolescents born to heterosexual parents with similar educational and financial backgrounds, the children of lesbian couples scored better on academic and social tests and lower on measures of rule-breaking and aggression.

A previous study of same-sex parenting, based on long-term health data, also found no difference in the health of children in either group.

“This confirms what most developmental scientists have suspected,” says Stephen [...]

… jingoistic propaganda for the USA v England World Cup match this Saturday.

Personally, I’m about out-of-my-mind with anticipation. This commercial makes me want to strap on my boots and go to war. (And might actually un-ruin the Gadsden Flag. Thanks for co-opting that awesome flag for your batshit insane political movement, Tea Baggers!)

If you are looking to have some fun and watch the game with a crowd instead of from your couch, come on down to either Crew Stadium or Claddagh Irish Pub on Front Street on Saturday. Come early, ready to drink, and ready to sing! [...]

As seen on Twitter:

Extreme Greenies:see now why we push”drill, baby, drill”of known reserves&promising finds in safe onshore places like ANWR? Now do you get it?

As if ecological disasters only happened in offshore drilling. Besides, Palin completely misunderstands the argument against continued drilling; oil is a limited resource, and we need to be reducing our consumption of it, not increasing it. There are lots of useful things we should be conserving the oil for, and we should be replacing it where possible with more sustainable alternatives.

BTW, for those of you on Twitter, I recommend following BPGlobalPR, a [...]

I saw this in today’s Dispatch; Crew: Louisiana’s Garey fumes as oil spills.

An avid outdoorsman, Crew forward Jason Garey loves to spend free time on the Hoover Reservoir fishing for bass, crappie and saugeye.

These days, however, the Louisiana native does more casting with a television remote than a rod and reel. He flips from one 24-hour news channel to another searching for information on the second disaster in five years to hit his homeland.

Watching images of oil-covered wildlife, Garey is filled with pain, anger and helplessness. Just as in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf [...]

Apparently, as part of the backlash to the Muhammad episode of South Park, folks – many of them Humanist or atheist – have elected to make today “Draw Muhammad Day”, and run around creating chalk graffiti on the ground of Muhammad in protest to the fact that Muslims take offense to it because – and I agree with this assessment – it’s pretty silly to find a depiction of Muhammad offensive.

However, I find this method of reaction silly at best, and incredibly tone-deaf, insulting, and destructive at worst.

It’s one thing to support the right of satirists to do [...]
