[UPDATED:] Game On! DeWine Certifies SB 5 Language; Husted certifies signatures!

This morning, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine certified "We Are Ohio"s proposed summary ballot language to place SB 5 on a referendum vote this November. We're still waiting on approval of the initial signatures by Secretary of State Husted, but we aren't expecting any problem with those as the campaign submitted 3,000 signatures and only need 1,000 valid ones. That means the SB 5 referendum process is officially in the petition signature gathering stage!

On Thursday, Governor Kasich signed SB 5, triggering the 90-days in which to get the bill on a referendum or it becomes law.

Over the weekend, the Dispatch reports that SB 5’s opponents gathered over 3,000 signatures for the 1,000 signatures they need to initially file with the Secretary of State and Attorney General’s office as we’ve discussed this morning.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has reported the signatures were delivered late this afternoon to the Secretary of State’s office. We’ve been told the required filings have been made with the Ohio Attorney General’s office.

Roughly a month ago today, I wrote a post outlining the referendum process to repeal SB 5.

If you recap that post, here’s what’s already occurred:

Step 1: Bill is signed by Governor Kasich. That occurred around 7 p.m. on March 31, 2011. The bill was filed the next day with the Ohio Secretary of State office (April 1), meaning that absent a referendum, it will be effective (become law) on July 1.

This morning Third Frontier and the Third Frontier Advisory Committee were both scheduled to meet today. I’m told from reliable sources that the meetings were essentially cancelled. No public explanation has been given.

However, word in Columbus, unofficially at least, is that the Administration’s lawyers are kind of spooked at that whole Mark Kvamme may not be able to be the Development Director under the Ohio Constitution issue.

AG Rich Cordray teams up with Ohio Domestic Violence Network to tackle teen dating violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in honor of that and the passage of House Bills 10 and 19, Attorney General Richard Cordray has teamed up with the Ohio Domestic Violence Network to release “Teen Relationship Violence: A Resource Guide to Safety.”

House Bill 19, which was passed by a largely partisan voted of 62-35, was named after teenager Tina Croucher who was murdered by her former boyfriend in 1992. The bill was introduced by State Rep. Sandra Stabile Harwood (D-Niles) and requires schools to teach dating abuse [...]

Suffolk Poll: Feel the GOP Wave in Ohio

Suffolk University out of Boston polled the Ohio Statewide races as well as some other issues. I guess it’s a testament to the important of Ohio to the national political scene that we have so many out-of-state, East Coast universities who poll Ohio fairly regularly like Quinnipiac.

Anyway, the poll of 500 likely voters had some expected, and unexpected results.

DeWine releases second negative ad… this time on ObamaCare?!?

Number of Ohio jobs lost so far due to ObamaCare? Zero.

Chance that a suit challenging the constitutionality of ObamaCare would succeed? Next to zero.

It’s ironic, when Rich Cordray released an ad that opened with a mention of DeWine’s years in Washington (and nothing more) DeWine blasted Cordray for going negative saying it was an indicator that he had nothing to offer the people of Ohio. I guess that only applies when a Democrat does it as DeWine has not one, but now two, actually negative ads running.

The only poll that has polled this question is Quinnipiac, [...]

When Richard Cordray released his first ad, DeWine attacked Cordray for going “negative” by… mentioning DeWine’s decades in Congress:

“It is telling that Richard Cordray decided to go negative in his first television advertisement,” DeWine said.

DeWine is up with his first television ad… Guess what he did? Yep, attacked Cordray.

But at least Mike DeWine got his first law enforcement endorsement.

Too bad it’s his own daughter.

DeWine’s ad also falsely creates the impression that he’s been endorsed by law enforcement and the Columbus Dispatch. DeWine’s campaign against corruption? Nonexistent. Where was Mike DeWine during Coingate? Jack [...]

Cordray on the air; DeWine is on the attack

Apparently, Mikey no likely Cordray’s ad. I haven’t even SEEN the ad, or DeWine’s criticism of it before I got Cordray’s campaign spokesman’s response to DeWine:

“When it comes to negative ads, Mike DeWine is a pro. Mike DeWine ran commercials showing fake, computer-generated footage of the World Trade Center on fire in his failed 2006 re-election campaign, and has proceeded to attack and distort Attorney General Cordray’s strong record of accomplishments since day one of this election.

“It’s funny that Mike DeWine thinks our commercial is negative when the only reference to the former Senator is that he spent [...]

Happy misleading Statewide candidates August campaign finance reporting day!

Yep, today’s the deadline for the Statewide candidates (except for the U.S. Senate) to report their August fundraising haul. And yet again, they don’t actually have to report their spending, so any cash-on-hand figures you see bandied about is highly misleading and shouldn’t be trusted. That’s why I’m not going to run them in this post.

We’ll update this post as the reports are filed today.
