Before he had even filed the FEC report due tomorrow, in March, Rob Portman had received more money from D.C. lobbyist than any other Republican running for federal office this year.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Rob Portman has done what no other non-incumbent has done—been one of the top recipients of  lobbyist donations running for Congress.

Let me repeat that.

Rob Portman has accepted more lobbyist money than Speaker Pelosi or John Boehner.

No wonder they call him “Mr. Washington.”

Some conservatives, and the campaign itself, is crowing about GOP challenger Jim Renacci’s FEC report he filed several days early.  Except, underneath the press releases is a FEC report that has alot of smoke and mirrors.

Roughly one-third of the campaign’s “individual” donations came from the candidate himself… on the last few days of the reporting period.  Rennaci donated $200,000 to his own campaign using the fortune he’s made selling Cash for Clunker calls and running and selling nursing homes dependent on federal entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.  This, we are told, makes him an ideal candidate for [...]

Rob Portman is hitting the airwaves with this new ad opposing cap-and-trade.

It’s an interesting move in that given most of the electorate (including, purportedly, nearly half of Ohio Republicans) don’t know Portman, I’m surprised he didn’t start off with a soft biographical spot.

The ad really is pretty good.  No distracting visuals.  A crisp, clear message that is well delivered whatever you think of its merits.  It’s a substantive ad that avoids even mentioning Fisher and doesn’t even come off as a negative ad.

Portman’s clearly banking that no viewer will go to his campaign website and read his [...]

Congressman John Boccieri’s Republican opponent announced that he will match dollar for dollar donations made to his campaign until tomorrow night from his “personal fortune.”

How did Jim Renacci make his fortune?

In 1985, Jim entered the healthcare industry, forming LTC Management Services, which owned and operated nursing home facilities throughout Ohio.

That’s right.  Jim Renacci’s “personal fortune” came from Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Oh, and let’s not forget that Renacci’s auto dealership accepted money from “Cash for Clunkers,” too.

Matt Naugle has been blasting the SEIU for help funding the DGA’s ads [...]

Greg Sargent  has a blog post up at the Washington Post about what the latest NBC/WSJ poll shows about the general electorate’s attitude towards a candidate that has been endorsed by half-term former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin:

The poll asked people how they’d respond if a Congressional candidate had various hypothetical attributes. Asked how they’d feel if a candidate were “endorsed by Sarah Palin,” the response was….

Enthusiastic about this attribute 8

Comfortable with this attribute 17

Have some reservations about this attribute 15

Very uncomfortable with this attribute 37

So a majority, 52%, reacted negatively. And an [...]

Back in April, the Ohio Democratic Party noted a few highly questionable donors giving money to Republican State Treasurer candidate Josh Mandel.  One of those donors was Roger Hertog who, the Ohio Democratic Party, had quite the business resume:

Roger Hertog, Vice Chairman of Alliance Capital Management, contributed $11,300 to Mandel. [Ohio Secretary of State, Campaign Finance, Accessed 4/13/10; contributions made 7/28/09 and 09/21/09] Hertog was in “hot water” over Alliance Capital Management’s loss of $335 million in Florida’s state pension funds [Washington Monthly, 3/1/02] Company settled with State of New York for $600 million for abusive trade [...]

Well, that didn’t take long.  I now know why Rob Portman has been entirely silent about the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico– he’s been paid well to keep quiet about it.

Despite running in a Midwestern state not known for having a vibrant oil industry, Rob Portman has accepted over $125,000 from the oil and gas industries’ PACs. Specifically, Portman has already accepted several thousands of dollars from Halliburton’s PAC.  In fact, Portman’s campaign most recently accepted $1,000 from Hailliburton’s PAC as recently as May 3rd when the national media began to question Halliburton’s role in [...]

Remember how the Carpetblogger predicted that a supposedly cash strapped Democratic Governors Association wouldn’t want to invest early in response to the RGA’s modest ad buy (which at last count was half of the size of the ad buy by the Strickland campaign)?

Whoops.

According to Politico, the Democratic Governors Association has lead the charge to form the independent expenditure group “Building a Stronger Ohio.”? They are sponsoring the same ad that AFSCME has running now.? According to the Rothenberg Report, the DGA has invested $1.5 million into Building a Stronger Ohio with the American Federation [...]

Jon Keeling (R-VA), is all a flutter over yesterday’s campaign finance report for reasons that escape me.? Both candidates are uncontested in their primaries, so the only figure that really matters is cash on hand as it’s all about building up the biggest warchest you can before the general election starts in earnest.

On that front, Strickland holds an impressively lead:

Strickland Cash On Hand: $7,124,556.11

Kasich: $5,202,298.18

Difference:? $1,922,257.93

Now Keeling wants people to only focus on the fact that Kasich raised a little over $500k more than Strickland, but he ignores that Kasich also SPENT [...]

Lee Fisher gets a pass

On April 23, 2010 By

I’m a little surprised that this nugget from Saturday’s Dayton Daily News isn’t getting more attention statewide:

Brunner accuses Fisher of running a negative campaign against her and pressuring donors not to contribute to her campaign ? charges Fisher denies. She also said Fisher resigned as development director so he could solicit business leaders who had benefited from development department grants and loans.

Again, Fisher denies the charge but his campaign received nearly $20,000 from eight business leaders whose companies collectively received $12.9 million in state loans, tax credits or grants.

Fisher said the contributions are not connected to the [...]

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported today that Lee Fisher raised only over $500k this most recent FEC quarter.  That’s got to be he worst fundraising quarter so far (granted, it’ll still be more substantially more than Brunner.)  We’ve all known that a great deal of that $1.8 million cash-on-hand Fisher reported legally CANNOT be used for the primary (in fact, probably most of it cannot be used.)  Is his fundraising well starting to run dry?

Fisher unexpectedly started to run his ad earlier than announced, the PD also reported, with a statewide cable ad buy that will follow [...]
