Earlier today, Jon Keeling tried to stoke anger among gun owners by hyping a story that the Ohio Democratic Party attempted to get the address of CCW permit holders likely to contact them and tell them about Democrats who support CCW issues like Governor Ted Strickland:

If there is one constituency that doesn’t like having their rights trampled upon, it’s supporters of the 2nd amendment.

And yet, that’s exactly what Strickland’s Ohio Democratic Party tried to do.

It’s bad enough that the ODP tried to skirt the privacy rights of Ohio’s gun owners.

Wow…. that’s pretty [...]

Five years ago, when I blogged on my own, I often focused just as much as legal developments as political one (thus, the moniker), so skip this post if you’re not interested in an open academic discussion about today’s Supreme Court decision in McDonald v. City of Chicago.

The main reason the McDonald decision is significant is because it’s the first time the United States Supreme Court has openly stated that it’s possible for a federal court to declare a state statute or municipal ordinance regulating the ownership or possession of firearms is subject to the Second Amendment of the [...]

Yesterday, the Carpetblogger alleged that Strickland running mate said at her press conference that the Second Amendment is irrelevant to the Governor’s race.  He claims to quote a story but doesn’t cite the source or link to it.

Of course, it’s a complete fiction as McGee Brown actually said that her personal views are irrelevant as she supports the Governor and he sets the policy for the State.  Despite my demand that Keeling correct his post, he’s refused to respond.

Not to be outdone, Matt Naugle admits what Keeling ignores (that the Associated Press and the Cleveland Plain [...]

Today, Dirk Thompson from 610 WTVN, a talk radio host in Columbus played a clip from an interview John Kasich gave an interview to Brian Wilson of Newstalk 1370 WSPD last week in which Kasich talks about his gun views.  (So, Kasich now we know that Kasich will be accessible to right-wing talk radio in Ohio, Fox News, but not the Ohio newspapers and television stations.) Let’s all take a listen to see how that goes:

When asked if Kasich would support re-instituting an assaults weapons plan like he support multiple times in the 1990s, Kasich [...]

Well, this should end well.

Jim Heath over at ONN just tweeted:

“Ohio Republicans dropping NRA memberships. Encouraging others to join gun owners of America.”

Yes, the Ohio Republicans should drop their membership to the NRA and join yet another gun rights group that positively will not be endorsing John Kasich in the fall after his multiple anti-gun votes.

By all means, Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine, please, please, PLEASE declare war on the NRA during a critical election season.

Tell every sportsman and gun owner in Ohio that if they stand with the NRA for supporting [...]

I’ll update this as the day goes on.

First, we have NBC Political Director Chuck Todd on Twitter:

More evidence that OH Dem Gov Ted Strickland may be in better shape than supposed C.W.: he nabbed NRA nod over GOPer Kasich.

“More evidence” is an obvious reference to the Ohio Poll and Friday’s campaign finance reports.

Matt Naugle at Right Ohio:

John Kasich has repeatedly apologized for his vote on the assault weapons ban, noting that it doesn’t reduce crime. But Ted Strickland’s votes in Congress on guns are still better.

Clearly, with [...]

CNN broke the story this morning.  The National Rifle Association today endorsed Governor Ted Strickland over his rival, former Congressman/Fox News host/Lehman Bros. executive John Kasich.

It is the first endorsement the organization has made for the general election.

From the Strickland campaign press release:

“Governor Strickland is a steadfast supporter of gun owners and hunters. Whether as congressman or as governor, he has not been afraid to stand up for the Second Amendment even when under pressure from national elites,” NRA Political Victory Fund Chairman Chris Cox said. “That is why NRA Political Victory Fund is pleased [...]

John Kasich is a career politician.  Even during his eight years with Lehman Brothers, he continued to write his political books and improve his national political exposure on Fox News.  Like most career politicians (who’s only “private” experience is with Fox News (ha!) and a company that was driven into the largest bankruptcy in the history of America), Kasich has the annoying habit of telling what he thinks his audience wants to hear.

Here’s John Kasich apologizing to a Tea Party rally crowd for voting in favor of the 1994 assault weapons ban:

Kasich: I voted for [...]

My journey into firearm ownership

On December 31, 2007 By

We’ve been talking a lot about firearm regulation here at Plunderbund this past year, and I even mentioned in passing I was taking a CCW/handgun safety course earlier in December. Last week, I purchased a handgun. As of today, I’m licensed to carry that handgun concealed. I wanted to relate my impressions of the process.

The good:

The training course I took. The state mandates certain minimum training requirements to apply for a concealed carry license, which this class met and exceeded. It was fun and informative. Frankly, I wouldn’t be disappointed if state law were amended to make the [...]

Seen in today’s online edition of The Lantern:

POLAND, OHIO – Ohio State freshman Marissa Plakosh was shot and killed in her Youngstown-area home when she was on holiday break at about 5:50 a.m. Saturday, December 15.

The victim, her brother and a family friend were seated in the same room when the friend was handling a loaded firearm. It discharged once and struck her in the neck, according to Poland Township Police.

This kind of tragedy is exactly the kind of thing sensible gun regulation could help eradicate. Thankfully, accidental gun deaths are already quite low – about [...]

Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, had this to say about the shootings at two Colorado churches on Sunday (transcribed from Countdown):

It is hard not to draw a line between the hostility that is being fomented in our culture from some in the secular media towards Christians and Evangelicals in particular, and the acts of violence that took place in Colorado Sunday. But I will say no more for now other than that our friends at New Life Church and YWAM are in our thoughts and prayers.

So… a kid gets kicked out of a missionary program, [...]
