Profile in Courage: Congreswoman Kilroy voted against Stupak amendment and for health care reform

Congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy knows that the national Republicans have painted a big target on her back.  She knows she’s likely facing a rematch from her ‘08 opponent in which she narrowly won thanks, in part, to a high youth turnout fueled by the presidential election that is unlikely to materialize in ‘10.

And yet, she not only voted for the House health insurance reform bill, but she also voted against the Stupak anti-choice amendment.

If you’ve got some spare change, give Kilroy some coin.  If you live in the area and have some spare time, then give Kilroy’s campaign your time. 

Kilroy is living proof that you don’t have to wear an uniform to show the courage of your convictions.

Who is editing Steve Stivers Wikipedia page?

Now I’m not saying that team Stivers is scrubbing his Wikipedia page – but there does certainly appear to be a lot of information missing from the most recent version.

Fortunately, Wikipedia stores a complete history of the edits made to the page- and with the Stivers’ page there have been quite a few.

The changes started in November after Stivers decided to run against Mary Jo Kilroy in the 15th. But they really picked up in late February after the ORP unanimously endorsed him.

The most recent version of Steve Stivers’ page, last edited on June 3rd, is 100% positive. All of the information seems to have come straight from the Stivers for Congress website complete with pro-Stivers spin.

Again, I’m not saying anyone over at the Stivers for Congress campaign office is actually making these changes- but all of the unfavorable information about Steve’s past seems to be removed each time it is added.

Keep in mind that a “Criticism” category is pretty standard on Wikipedia pages related to politicians and usually includes a list and description of controversies involving the subject.

And Steve Stivers has had at least a few controversies that certainly should be listed like they used to be on previous versions of the page.

The first relates to his history as a registered lobbyist…

Stivers has recently come under criticism for being a registered lobbyist. Stivers is a registered lobbyist but told the Columbus Dispatch that he was not. When confronted with this he claimed his job title was “vice president of government relations” and that he was “not a lobbyist per se”. However, documentation from the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee proves he was a registered lobbyist.

And the other related to the “Vets for Freedom” endorsement…

In March 2008, Stivers received criticism locally and nationally from conservatives for receiving and accepting the support and endorsement of a conservative group “Vets for Freedom”. This group has fallen to scandal after it was discovered that a chief contributer and blogger for the group is a gay porn star. This individual starred in films such as “Touched by an Anal”.

It’s up to us to keep these guys honest, folks.

Steve Stivers Runs to the Middle on Energy Policy

I guess the recent polling results released by the Kilroy campaign have Stivers running scared.

In an attempt to recast himself as a moderate to central Ohio’s voters, Republican Steve Stivers announced his 5-point “energy security policy” that, not surprisingly, sounds a hell of a lot like something a Democrat might propose.

As a matter of fact, half of his plan sounds very similar to Mary Jo Kilroy’s positions. (note: Kilroy and Stivers are competing for Ohio’s 15th congressional district seat )

In addition to investing 100 billion in alternative energy research to drive to growth of “green collar” jobs, Stivers also proposes raising fuel economy standards.

You can run to the middle, Steve. But we all know who you really are.

A video of the announcement is included below but I warn you: it’s kind of painful to watch.

Poor quality video. Random car and pedestrian traffic in the background. No teleprompter. A long speech typed out word-for-word on 10 sheets of paper.

I’m sure some people might even find it funny.

Personally, I felt kind of bad for the guy when I watched it.

Ohio 15: Kilroy up by 10

I just got the first polling numbers I’ve seen for the 15th.

According to a poll commissioned by the Kilroy campaign, Kilroy has a 47% to 37% lead over Stivers.
