Last week, John Kasich expressed regret at his seemingly flippiant attitude towards diversity at the very beginning of his term. He even said that he thinks his Administration should strive harder than Governor Strickland’s to get the State to meet its 1980s mandate of setting aside 15% of all government contracts to minority-owned businesses.
We should support the Governor on this, because we doubt many in his party will. But that support also means we hold him accountable for his budget, which cuts funding for the offices charged with enforcing Ohio’s minority-owned business set asides by over half.
Also, Governor Kasich is making the right call on sentencing reform. If you support gun control, then you probably should support Kasich’s killing, for now at least, of the restaurant CCW bill, too.
Full Story... →Another achievement John Kasich has listed in his 100 days of achievements is keeping Goodyear from moving to another State:
Keeping Ohio Companies in Ohio—American Greetings, Bob Evans, Diebold and Goodyear saving more than 5,500 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue are saved.
And for once, Kasich is talking about a company that was seriously considering leaving Ohio and had multiple economic development offers to lure it away. And it’s also true that if it were not for the efforts of the Ohio Department of Development and local officials, Goodyear might have left.
The problem for Kasich is this all occurred in 2007, not 2011.
Full Story... →Stop me if you’ve heard this before: John Kasich takes credit for something that turns out was not his idea, but something that was a labor of love of the Strickland Administration. On top of that, Kasich is touting the achievement while hiding that it’s being entirely funded by “one time” federal stimulus money.
Or did you hear the one about how Governor Kasich approached U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown about seeking another extension of a federal stimulus program for Medicaid?
Or how John Kasich’s budget relies on a Washington bailout that doesn’t even appear to be in the works? Or how it also relies on cost savings to the States provided by “ObamaCare?”
Full Story... →For the thirteenth consecutive month, Ohio’s unemployment rate dropped in March from 9.2% in February to 8.9% as the State had a net gain of 2,200 driven mostly by the 5k jobs gained in the manufacturing sector. Ohio saw a 1.6% drop in it’s unemployment rate over the past twelve months and is now .1% above the national unemployment rate.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, this makes the Strickland Recovery the second strongest recovery in Ohio since 1983, which again, draws a historical parallel between John Kasich’s and Dick Celeste’s first term.
Full Story... →John Kasich’s budget and anti-union agenda isn’t as popular as you (and Governor Kasich) might think. A few weeks ago, Kasich pitched his budget to the state credit rating companies. They weren’t overly impressed.
Full Story... →Just about every month last year, I’d do a post about Ohio’s unemployment figures and show how the State was already in an economic recovery that the media refused to acknowledge during the political campaign. Almost inevitably, Jon Keeling at Third Base Politics would essentially try to write a rebuttal post denying that Ohio was in any sort of economic recovery.
First, let’s start with a graph Keeling like to use over and over again. It comes from Governor Strickland’s Council of Economic Advisors, an entity comprised of the leading economic forecasters in Ohio’s private market. The economic [...]
Full Story... →Governor Strickland is doing a round of “exit” interviews with the Ohio media to reflect on his Administration and to offer some thoughts about events since the election.
Strickland on Ohio’s unemployment:
According to the Associated Press:
"Our unemployment rate now is even with the national unemployment rate. First time that’s happened since December of 2002," he said. "So I’m leaving office having established, I believe, the foundation for future growth in Ohio, and I’m proud of that."
Our unemployment is still too high, but what most people fail to acknowledge was that Ohio’s unemployment substantially higher than [...]
Full Story... →Ken Hanson is legal counsel for the Buckeye Firearms Association, which has endorsed Governor Strickland. He’s also the Chair of its Legislative Committee. He filed an amicus brief in the groundbreaking Heller and McDonald U.S. Supreme Court cases. In other words, he’s not just some average joe member (although I admit in talking to him in the past, he is a real down to earth kind of guy.)
Well, apparently he has had enough of John Kasich trying to pull a fast one on the gun issue, and he let Kasich have it on the BFA website.
He [...]
Full Story... →Here’s today’s Columbus Dispatch’s editorial on Governor Strickland’s school reforms:
“Not that scrapping Strickland’s plan is, by itself, bad for Ohio schools.
“The governor touts it as a bold, new way of delivering education, but it really is, mainly, a list of jobs to be filled. It mandates that each clump of so many students must have X number of teachers, counselors, aides, nurses and the like, with little opportunity for different school districts to use resources in ways that meet their particular needs.”
“It’s a one-size-fits-all approach, well-designed for pleasing the education unions that are a large [...]
Full Story... →Quinnipiac continues to the an outlier poll that has grossly overestimated John Kasich’s lead. For that reason, I debate even writing about a poll that even Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine said in Sunday’s Dispatch is simply not believable.
But in case you’re wondering, and you have a sadist streak that requires you to fret over nonsense polls, today’s Quinnipiac poll also shows the race tightening to Kasich 49% to Strickland 43%—a six-point race.
What’s remarkable about it is that it’s the first time since Quinnipiac went to its flawed likely voter model that it has Kasich [...]
Full Story... →Today, the Ohio Poll came out with it’s second poll in a week, this time for the Ohio Newspaper Organization.
Yep, that’s 49% to 47%. A week ago, the Ohio Poll claimed it was a 51%-43% race.
If you’re wondering, yes, part of the reason for the change is that the Ohio Poll slightly altered its likely voter model since the last Ohio Poll. However, the change really wasn’t significant. According to the Columbus Dispatch:
“Today’s poll shows Republicans outnumbering Democrats by 5 percentage points, with independents making up only 9 percent of [...]
