We all knew it was just a matter of time before John Kasich abandoned his calls to repeal the Ohio income tax—a proposal he offered solely to fend off a primary challenge by throwing the reddest of red meat the the reddest voters in the State of Ohio.

In his May 3 e-mail, Kasich spokesman Scott Milburn advised Ohio Public Employees Retirement System executive Carol Drake that it would be “valuable to explain” that Lehman investments included not only Lehman stock and securities but money the firm invested in other companies, such as McDonald’s.
“The media will not get the full picture unless you explain it: not all of this money was lost as a result of the Lehman bankruptcy,” Milburn wrote. Milburn and Drake are both alums of the administration of former GOP Gov. Bob Taft.

If John Kasich succeeds in abolishing the state income tax, maybe we could just shut down the whole Ohio state government. That way the Democrats wouldn?t have anything to take over, and they?d be out of our lives forever.
No word from the Kasich camp whether such a “burn it down so you can’t have it” plan exists.

COLUMBUS — Legislative analysts have determined that a proposal to phase out Ohio’s income tax — a key issue in the 2010 governor’s race — would cost state and local governments and libraries more than $800 million next year.

The repeal, in every reporting of it I’ve seen, is sold as being necessary to bring good-paying jobs like manufacturing jobs back into Ohio.
