Republican Cash LandRemember where Ney recently announced his bid for re-election amid a cloud of scandal and corruption? Tuscarawas County Republican Party headquarters in Dover. Which is right next to a “consumer lending” business. The juxtaposition is priceless.

From The Columbus Dispatch:

More than 100 supporters gathered at party headquarters for Ney’s campaign kickoff, and nary a one mentioned the signs outside. But across the street, protester Robert Danco, of New Philadelphia, took note. “That’s appropriate,” he said.

Ugh. This is really boring. Not only that, but the idiot plays into the hands of the Republicans by using the tired ass War on Terror frame. Earth to Tim and company: there IS no war on terror! Damn it. No wonder we lose.

Who the hell picked this guy? He’s parroting Bush and not saying much other than “Hey, we respectfully disagree”…we don’t need Mister Rogers.

Argh…he just said family farms. Ever hear of a ship that has sailed Tim?

Skip the Kaine blather and read the Hackett response. I’d love to hear me some Hackett right about now…

Addicted to Rhetoric: Bush’s State of the Union

Senate Candidate Calls President Out for Empty Rhetoric

Cincinnati, OH — Paul Hackett, Iraq War veteran and Democratic candidate for Senate in Ohio, responded this evening to President Bush’s State of the Union address.

ADDICTED TO OIL?

The President said America is addicted to oil and far too energy dependent.

Paul Hackett said, “A former oil executive telling us we are addicted to oil is like a tobacco company executive complaining that their employees take too many smoke breaks. Exxon made almost $11 billion last quarter, while Americans are paying surging prices to fill their gas tanks and heat their homes. The President should stop blaming Americans and put pressure on his cronies in the oil industry to develop and sell the technology we need to become less energy dependent on foreign AND domestic oil.” [click to continue…]

Not liveblogging, but close. Following are my thoughts as I listened in on the SOU speech tonight. Call it haiku coverage. Blink journalism. Here goes:

Wondering what war hero or mother of a killed infantryman will be present tonight. Always hated that days of our lives strategy.

Opens with King comments…nice. Almost a must, but still a good move. Brings back memories of New Orleans.

Actually pronounced the word rostrum correctly! Sweet George!

Civil tone he wants…LOL. Goodwill and respect for others – gotta love it.

George really needs a better comb…got bed head. Talking about securing peace, etc. but I keep looking at the bed head. They must have shaken him awake from his nap to come give a speech. [click to continue…]

from Hackett For Ohio:

Cincinnati, OH – Paul Hackett, Iraq War veteran and Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, released the following statement today regarding the confirmation of Justice Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

“Today’s confirmation of Judge Alito to the Supreme Court is not in the best interests of the United States, and will tilt the Court far to the right. Judge Alito is not a fitting replacement for Justice O’Connor,” Hackett said. “During his confirmation hearings Justice Alito did little to address the fears many mainstream Americans have that he would use his position on the bench to advance his radical agenda.”

“Mike DeWine towed the party line and put his stamp of approval on what I fear will be a polarizing force on the Supreme Court for the next 30 years,” Hackett said.

Hackett supported the efforts of those Democratic Senators that lead the call to filibuster the nomination of Justice Samuel Alito, but was disappointed that more did not show leadership on the issue.

“I’m proud of those Democrats in the Senate who fought back against the Bush Administration and Senate Republicans’ rush to place a right-wing ideologue on the bench for a life-time appointment,” Hackett said. “It is shameful that some in our party missed an important opportunity to show regular Americans that they stand for something, and were willing to do battle to protect America from a radical shift to the right on the Supreme Court. The people of Ohio should know that when I am their Senator, I will have the courage to stand up for what I believe in,” Hackett said.

Grandpaboy: Cold Day

by Eric on January 31, 2006 · Comments

I can’t say it any better than this, so won’t try:

Coretta Scott King passed away. The other day, I commented that I couldn’t know what it was like for Teddy Kennedy to see his brothers killed for their beliefs. For Mrs. King to have her husband murdered was unjust in the truest sense of the word. That she could carry on his work is laudable, and our country is better for it.

The Gang of 19

by Eric on January 31, 2006 · Comments

Voting yes to end the debate on the Alito nominatin, effectively ending a filibuster:

Akaka, Hawaii; Baucus, Mont.; Bingaman, N.M.; Byrd, W.Va.; Cantwell, Wash.; Carper, Del.; Conrad, N.D.; Dorgan, N.D.; Inouye, Hawaii; Johnson, S.D.; Kohl, Wis.; Landrieu, La.; Lieberman, Conn.; Lincoln, Ark.; Nelson, Fla.; Nelson, Neb.; Pryor, Ark.; Rockefeller, W.Va.; Salazar, Colo.

Remember the names, folks. They gave you the changing face of the modern Supreme Court.

Also, remember this little gang.

I’m sure they will all now vote against his final confirmation tomorrow knowing it is a throw away vote and will have “done their jobs”…cowards. So remember, don’t ask if they voted to confirm or not – ask if they voted to block his nomination. Big difference.

From the new blog:

Newcomer Raises $465,779.31 in 1st 1/4 of Campaign

Cincinnati, OH – Paul Hackett, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate and Iraq War veteran, announced today that he has raised $465,779.31 from 8,675 individuals during the first quarter of his campaign. Hackett announced his candidacy on October 24, almost a full month into the quarter.

Hackett’s tremendous showing ensures a competitive primary campaign against Sherrod Brown, an entrenched career politician who is expected to announce raising slightly more than Hackett despite serving in public office for more than 30 years.

BY THE NUMBERS:

Total Raised: $465,779.31
Cash on Hand: $229,783.67
Contributors: 8,675
Average Contribution: $51.00

Best news to me is the avg. contribution amount. Speaks of grassroots support (not to mention out of state blogosphere stuff – which I’m sure is in there heavy). Other cool thing was I received a “blog press release”. Odd thing is the email was addressed to “Eric Eric Hananoki”. I have no idea who Mr. Hananoki is, but eric@plunderbund.com is definately me.

OK, so blog is hard to rhyme. But Hackett does have a brand new blog:

Go create an account. This looks like a really unique tool that should come in handy. I look forward to seeing where it will go…

Bob Ney Gets Piped

by Eric on January 30, 2006 · Comments

No, not over the head – I would never advocate such a thing. He did announce his intent to seek re-election even after being caught up in scandal after scandal. I hear he didn’t wear a fedora and black coat though so that was a good move at least. He did get piped though, as protestors greeted him outside of a restaurant where he made a follow-up “I’m Alright” announcement:

Ney Protest

Ney Protest with bagpiper

Ney Protest

The Dispatch reported Ney’s defiance despite the swirling trouble he appears to be in:

DOVER, Ohio — Defiant in the face of scandal, U.S. Rep. Bob Ney launched his re-election bid yesterday, vowing to overcome “the coordinated smear campaign against me.”

Ney says he will be vindicated, in fact he promises it. We can’t wait for that Bob. Maybe it is all easily explainable. Maybe this was just a big misunderstanding:

In 2002, after Abramoff worked with conservative Christian activist Ralph Reed to close the casino of the Tigua tribe. Abramoff persuaded the tribe to hire him to lobby Congress to reopen the casino. Shortly after Abramoff met with Ney to ask him to push the legislation, the Tigua (by overnight mail) sent three checks to Ney’s political committees, totaling $32,000. The apparent exchange of campaign contributions in return for Ney’s support of an amendment to reopen the Tigua’s casino could constitute bribery.

I’m sure the 32K was part of your regular charitable work that you do for the kids, right?

The article mentions this little tidbit as well:

“The last several months have not been easy,” said Ney, who has said that he was duped by Abramoff. “I have seen my name savaged by the national media . . . I have watched as the liberal establishment in Washington engaged in a coordinated smear campaign against me.”

Smear campaign? Buddy, it’s called a federal investigation – and you are ensnared. I wonder if your constituents fear fire from all the smoke they are smelling? I wonder if they all know you have already spent $136,000 on lawyers to defend your sorry ass. I have a feeling the bagpiper knows…

The arrogance is just unreal. The book on Ney/Abramoff is not good. The record is clear on his actions and the money behind it. The GOP foks commenting in this article are a microcosm of what is wrong with this state and to a larger extent this country. They are taking turn the other cheek to a whole new level!

But, Ney couldn’t possibly get away without invoking the big fella…just for that added push amongst the brainwashed:

“People say we need a lot of prayers these days, and I think we do.”

Bob, you have no idea…

I’m not really sure what to file this under. I want to say “You Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me”, but then again it could also go under “This Has To Be A Joke”. I guess I’ll just include a “see also”.

To be honest with you, this post sat in draft for a week now. Not until today when I got an email from John Sauter of ODP did I attempt to go back to it and blog on it. See, it makes me sick to my stomach and I hate that feeling. It also gave me chest pains at one point – literally hurt my heart to see people doing this.

The group of nutjobs from Kansas (wtf IS the matter with Kansas anyways?) have arrived in Ohio and are spreading the hate filled message of the Westboro Baptist Church at our statehouse today.

God Hates Fags

Anyone still disagree that Hackett went too far with the OBL references? I’d say he hit the nail on the head with the above nutjob, wouldn’t you?

Check out the hate and vitriol this group has perfected (website). I honestly thought this could possibly be a parody of some sorts…possibly even a joke – but I don’t think so. Not only do they think God hates fags and soliders (wanna get any more radically fundamentalist red staters? huh? you done yet?)…they also hate dead West Virginian coal miners. No shit. Can’t make the shit up. They have signs!

Absolutely disgustipating. I guess Dan Stewart (D-Columbus) was on hand to provide a Democratic response and refute their message of hatred. I’m not sure that is even necessary. Some things just need to be left out in the sun long enough to rot.

Rep. Boccieri has introduced legislation that would provide a 300-foot buffer so these crazies would have to keep away from gravesites and churches while a funeral is taking place. 300 feet is not enough.

Update: A visual definition of child abuse

Ney Skeered?

by Eric on January 27, 2006 · Comments

Word is Bob Ney has the jitters and hired some undercover cops from Chillicothe for his announcement today. Had the restaurant staked out since like 9am – LOL. Sounding like there might be some form of a protest complete with bagpipes (those always did remind me of death and hopefully this is the death of a campaign).

I’ll be on the road in a bit to visit family in KY, but when I get an update I’ll let you know…might even have some photos!

Been meaning to blog about this for some time. Given Jill’s wonderful prod to find productive things to do with the Chris Redfern blog snub, I figured this a good opportunity. This is how you do blogger outreach:

I recently got an email from Cassie Gaffney, the deputy campaign manager for Joe Sulzer who is running against Ney in the 18th District. She starts with:

I wanted to introduce myself to you. My name is Cassie Gaffney, I’m the deputy campaign manager for Joe Sulzer who is running for Congress in Bob Ney’s district.

Introductions. Always the way to begin conversations, and I view communication from campaign, party, or other media as just that – a conversation. [click to continue…]

Had to comment on this before I hit hay. Jill’s post about her meeting with Chris Redfern got some reaction from a couple of prominent lefty bloggers (OH02 and BSB). Like others have pointed out, Jill’s stuff is always well written and entertaining. There is more there than Redfern’s dismissal but we bloggers like to focus first on getting slapped in the face with the white glove of establishmentality:

If he were in a position akin to that of a media placement advisor for a corporation, but doing so for a politician, what percentage of a budget did he think blogs would get?

Zero. Unequivocally.

BSB has the best rundown of why this is serious hogwash and extremely disturbing given this man was just elected to strategize for us all.

Chris might have a point that the relative size of bloggers and blog readers is very small compared to the general Ohio population. The point he completely misses is the growth curve. He thinks the story might be different in 4, 6, or 8 years. I love the large room for error there…but they are all very largely overshot. It won’t be that long. Growth online happens very quickly.

So Chris, my man. Hope you see this. Here’s the thing. Be Toyota on this one and not GM. Don’t wait for the damned bell curve to pass you by…get out in front of it. It is, believe it or not, what is expected of you. See it coming and react – because it is coming. [click to continue…]

Probably too little too late:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sen. John Kerry will attempt a filibuster to block the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Alito’s confirmation would be an ideological coup on the Supreme Court,” Kerry said in a written statement explaining his support for a filibuster.

“We can’t afford to see the court’s swing vote, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, replaced with a far-right ideologue like Samuel Alito.”

Just got an email from PFAW also. Here’s where you can help:
